Understanding Sensory Processing Differences in Children

What it means when the world feels louder, brighter, or harder to read, and how families can help.

Every child takes in the world through their senses. For some children, that incoming information arrives turned up, turned down, or simply organized in a different way. A shirt tag feels like sandpaper. A busy classroom sounds like a wall of noise. A child craves spinning, crashing, and deep squeezes, or barely seems to notice a scraped knee. These are sensory processing differences, and if you parent or teach a neurodivergent child, you have probably seen them up close.

This post is a plain-language introduction: what these differences are, what the research actually says, and small things that genuinely help.

More than five senses

Most of us learned about five senses in school. The nervous system actually manages eight. Alongside sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell, there are three we rarely name. Vestibular sense tracks balance and movement. Proprioception tells us where our body is in space, through our muscles and joints. Interoception reads internal signals like hunger, a full bladder, a racing heart, and the body feelings that come with emotion.

Children with sensory processing differences may be over-responsive to some input and easily overwhelmed, under-responsive and slow to notice it, or sensory-seeking and hungry for more. The same child can sit in different places for different senses, and even shift from hour to hour. A child might cover their ears at the vacuum yet crash happily into couch cushions all afternoon.

Is it a "disorder"? An honest answer

You will see the term Sensory Processing Disorder, often shortened to SPD. It is worth being straight about its status. SPD is not a standalone diagnosis in the DSM-5, the manual clinicians use, and a campaign to add it was not successful. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises pediatricians not to use SPD as a standalone diagnosis, and to evaluate carefully for autism, ADHD, or anxiety when sensory symptoms show up, because sensory differences overlap heavily with all three.

At the same time, sensory differences are real and formally recognized. Hyper or hypo reactivity to sensory input is one of the diagnostic criteria for autism in the DSM-5. Sensory differences are commonly reported in roughly half of children with ADHD, and in a majority of autistic children, though exact figures vary by study because there is no single agreed test. Many neurodiversity-affirming clinicians now prefer the phrase "sensory processing differences" over "disorder," framing these as natural variation to understand and support rather than a defect to fix.

The honest summary: there is broad agreement that these differences are genuine and can be hard for kids and families. The debate is about whether they form a distinct disorder, what causes them, and how well specific treatments work.

What recent research is learning

The science is active. In late 2025, researchers at UC San Francisco scanned the brains of 83 neurodivergent children between the ages of eight and twelve. Children who were over-responsive to sound, touch, and light showed a distinctive brain pattern, with less activity in outward-facing sensory and motor networks and more in inward-facing networks tied to self-control. The researchers described it as a brain that dials up self-control and dials down sensory input when it feels overwhelmed. Earlier UCSF work had already found differences in the brain's white matter wiring in the pathways that connect our senses.

Interoception, that inner sense, is another area drawing attention. A 2025 review found that differences in reading internal body signals are linked to how children recognize and manage emotion. That connection matters for families, because a child who struggles to notice rising distress, hunger, or fatigue may reach a meltdown before anyone, including the child, saw it building.

What actually helps

When it comes to support, the strongest and most current evidence points to individualized occupational therapy. A 2025 systematic review found strong evidence that occupational therapy using Ayres Sensory Integration helps children reach their own specific, measured goals, with moderate evidence for daily living and social skills. The key word is individualized. The therapist sets concrete goals with a family and tracks progress against them.

It is just as important to know what the evidence does not support. A 2024 review of school-based sensory supports looked at 61 studies and found only 15 percent offered good quality evidence. It found some benefit for sound amplification systems, alternative seating, and multi-sensory spaces in certain situations, and it specifically did not recommend weighted vests, a popular tool. The lesson is not that nothing helps. It is that any single product deserves a skeptical question: what evidence supports this, for my child's specific goal?

Small things families can try

You do not need a diagnosis or a gadget to start supporting a child's sensory needs. A few low-risk places to begin:

Become a detective of your child's sensory profile. Notice which senses and which direction. Does noise overwhelm them? Do they crave crashing and squeezing? Do they miss cues like a wet shirt or a full bladder? Patterns differ from child to child.

Adjust the environment, not the child. Softer or warmer lighting, less background noise, noise-reducing headphones, and a calm retreat space a child can reach before they hit overwhelm are all gentle, reversible changes.

Read a meltdown as overwhelm, not misbehavior. A meltdown is a body-based stress response to too much or too little input. It is not manipulation, and it does not stop just because a demand is met. In the moment, felt safety and a calm presence help far more than discipline.

Honor sensory seeking as a real need. Movement breaks, deep pressure, and safe things to chew or squeeze give a seeking child what their body is asking for.

Get a full evaluation before committing to a program. Because sensory symptoms overlap with autism, ADHD, and anxiety, a thorough look makes sure nothing is missed. If you pursue therapy, ask for specific goals and check whether they are being met.

The bigger picture

Sensory differences are not only challenges. Autistic-led frameworks describe how intense, focused attention can bring deep and joyful engagement with the world. A child who notices every texture, sound, and pattern is experiencing something rich, not only something hard. The goal is not to make a child's senses ordinary. It is to help them feel safe, understood, and supported in a world that was mostly built for a different kind of nervous system.
